VizBiz Training: Tele-seminiar Series in the Fall, 2010

An eight-part comprehensive business series for visual artists will be offered in tele-seminar format in the Fall of 2010.

 

The course will run September 7 – October 26 and be available at 7pm Eastern on Tuesday evenings, with each segment running one hour, followed by a brief Q&A period.  Participants must register in advance. Fee: $30 per segment. A discount equivalent to two free classes will be offered to those wishing to purchase all eight segments. Offer expires September 13, just prior to presentation of the second segment.

 

The first session will be Business Basics for the Professional Visual Artist,

designed to teach the basics one must have to be considered a professional artist, including business name, tagline, elevator speech, business card and portfolio.  A step-by-step checklist is provided to help artists get their business off the ground or take it to the next level.

Workshop: Sales 101 - SAT, May 22, 2010

Learn proven sales techniques, how to handle difficult questions & comments, gain skill and confidence.  Artists at all levels are welcome. Location: Fine Arts Theatre in downtown Asheville, 9am-11am.  Fee $30.  Call or email to register by Thursday, May 20 – pay with check or card.

Workshop: How to Plan Your Show & Keep Your Sanity!

This business workshop (SAT, Nov 14) provides artists with the tools needed to effectively manage the overwhelming set of tasks required to successfully plan and mount an exhibit. An extensive list of topics will be covered, including:  Location, Timetable, Contract, Marketing, Announcements, Incentives, Installation, Insurance, Pricing, Sales, Documentation and Follow-up.  Workshop is sponsored by the Appalachian Pastel Society and takes place 1:00-4:00pm in the Education Bldg at the WNC Ag Center in Fletcher.  Fee is $45. Prior to the workshop, Outland will discuss, “How To Know If You Are Ready For Your Own Art Show.” This segment will take place 10:30am-12:00pm, following a 30-min membership meeting. Galleries 101 Workshop for Artists: SAT, Nov 7, 2009 - 9-11am

This workshop provides valuable tips on how to target professional galleries, both online and in person.  You will learn what to look for and how to ask the tough questions before deciding whether a gallery would be a good match for you and your work.

Sales Workshop for Artists - WED, Oct 28, 2009, 6-8pm

From Surviving to Thriving:  Sales Techniques for the Holiday Season

Worried about how your sales are going to be this holiday season?  This workshop will offer ideas on how to make the most of it.  Topics will include reaching new audiences, how to approach clients (and keep them coming back), as well as selling techniques that will improve the bottom line!  Presented by the Artist Alliance, 6-8pm on Oct 28 at Mountain BizWorks, 153 South Lexington Avenue in Asheville.  Fee: $25.  Call Naomi Langsner, 828-259-2834, x27.

Hilton Reception for Asheville Area Artists - SUN Oct 25, 2009, 2-4pm

The public is invited to view an exhibit featuring area artists whose works were recently acquired by the new Hilton Asheville Biltmore Park. The Asheville Area Arts Council partnered with the hotel to administer the project and Wendy H. Outland was hired as project coordinator. Michelle Miller, owner of Double Exposure in Fletcher, was also instrumental during the acquisition phase. This is the first of four exhibits the Hilton will host to showcase regional talent. 

 

Artists with works in the hotel collection include Kevin Aita, Ray Byram, Olga Dorenko, Claire Simpson Jones, Ron Morecraft, Claire Smith, Deborah Squier, Peggy Taylor and Adija Wolf.

 

Refreshments will be served at the reception, 2-4pm on Sunday, Oct 25, in the Mitchell Ballroom at the Hilton Asheville Biltmore Park. The hotel is located just 20 minutes south of downtown at 43 Town Square Blvd (take Long Shoals Rd. exit 37, off I-26). The exhibit remains on display through Nov. 30.

Portfolio Workshop: SAT Oct 3, 2009

This workshop will provide specific guidelines for creating or strengthing your portfolio (resume, artist statement, price list and images).  Learn proper formatting, what to include/exclude, and how to prepare documents if you are an emerging artist.  Also discover  how to write an effective statement, and get tips for submitting your portfolio.  Artists that bring printed documents may request critique.

Artists at all levels are welcome.

Consultant for Art Acquisition by Hotel

Wendy H. Outland worked with the Asheville Area Arts Council in partnership with Hilton Asheville Biltmore Park to place works by area artists in the new hotel (Summer 2009).  Michelle Miller, owner of Double Exposure, was also instrumental in this process.
